Ukrainian Sumo Wrestler Aonishiki Wins Second Consecutive Basho

For the second straight basho (tournament), Ukrainian ōzeki Aonishiki won a Day 15 playoff to capture the Emperor’s Cup:
Aonishiki, born as Danylo Yavhusishyn in Vinnytsia, Ukraine, has skyrocketed up the banzuke (rankings), capturing his first two yūshōs (tournament wins) in just his fifth and sixth appearances in the Makuuchi (Sumo’s highest division).
Just the second Ukrainian to reach the sekitori (Sumo’s top two professional divisions), Aonishiki is the first rikishi (wrestler) to win his first basho at both the sekiwake and ōzeki ranks in nearly a century. It’s unlikely this will result in a promotion to yokozuna, as rikishi typically require two consecutive yūshōs at the ōzeki rank before earning it.
That being said, 2026 may very well be the year Aonishiki has Sumo’s highest honor bestowed upon him.
