Hoshoryu Becomes Sumo’s 74th Yokozuna

Sumo: Mongolian wrestler Hoshoryu becomes 74th yokozuna

The coveted rank of Yokozuna in Sumo is only reached by the absolute best in the sport. Mongolian westler Hōshōryū is just the 74th man to achieve it in over 275 years, doing so by winning the January 2025 makuuchi in Tokyo – the first of six top-division tournaments held annually.

As a result of his promotion, Hōshōryū is now the only active Yokozuna, replacing fellow Mongolian Terunofuji. Earlier in that very same January tournament, Terunofuji was forced to retire from competition due to excessive injury.

The first Mongolian wrestler to achieve Yokozuna was Hōshōryū’s uncle Asashōryū, having done so in 2003. Hōshōryū and Asashōryū both ascended to the highest rank on the same date – January 29th.
