(2024) Akebono Tarō, First Foreign-Born Yokozuna, Dies @ 54

My last post dove into the world of Sumo wrestling, a sport with more history than any other, as the modern format has been in place since the 17th century.
For the sport’s first three centuries, its top rank of yokozuna was exclusively occupied by Japanese-born wrestlers. However, as the 21st century approached, an influx of foreign talent began to compete, with some of them showing more prowess than the natives.

In 1990 on September 9th or 9/9, American-born Akebono Tarō, whose real name was Chadwick Haheo Rowan, made his Makuuchi debut. He would go on to win Eleven top-division championships.

The story of this American rikishi becoming a yokozuna is all synced up to American pro wrestling company WWE and its stars Rikishi and Yokozuna.

WWF’s “Rikishi” first began his Sumo gimmick in 1999.

Akebono once participated in a sumo match at WWE’s WrestleMania 21.

After making the top division, Akebono set off on an unprecedented ascension. Less than three years later, he won his third yūshō, which caused the Deliberation Council to offer him a promotion to Yokozuna – something no non-Japanese athlete had ever accomplished.

Rowan was born on the 128th day of the year, which had Reduced numerology of 38:

The American, whose last name was Rowan, became the 64th Yokozuna in the sport’s history. He ended up dying on the 6th of April, or 6/4:
Standing over 500 pounds, Akebono, born as Chadwick Rowan, was one of the largest rikishi to ever compete in Makuuchi. Unfortunately, humans that size typically do not live to be very old, for obvious reasons. After several years of battling health issues, he died in April 2024 on a date with Primary numerology of Fifty-four (54):![]()

Akebono received his promotion on the 25th of January, written as 25/1 in Japan:

These numbers are commonly-associated with death.

Does this mean Akebono was somehow murdered? It’s difficult for me to believe that’s the case. One could reasonably assume that someone his size would die of natural causes before the age of 54. Nevertheless, the synchronicity is undeniable.

WWF’s Yokozuna
Akebono died on April 6th, 2024, which was the first of two days of WWE’s WrestleMania 40.

In the Main Event of that year’s WrestleMania, Roman Reigns lost the WWE Championship after the company’s longest title reign since the 1980’s.

Roman Reigns’s real name is Joe Anoa’i. He is the cousin of Rodney Agatupu Anoa’i, who wrestled in WWE under the name Yokozuna. Yokozuna won his first WWF Championship in 1993 – the same year Akebono made yokozuna.
