Kim Min Chul (Soulkey) Going for Fourth Consecutive ASL Championship
Earlier today, I made this post on the death of Tommy Helms, who was Pete Rose’s “right-hand man.”
Aside from his gambling habits, Pete Rose was best-known for breaking Ty Cobb’s all-time hits record on September 11th, 1985. The first men to congratulate him were named Robinson and Power. See my post on this from last year.
Also on September 11th, 1985, American StarCraft champion and commentator Geoff ‘iNcontroL’ Robinson was born. Geoff was a Power lifter.
Robinson died suddenly in the year ’19, a span of 1900 days before Pete Rose. Tommy Helms, who wore #19 for the Reds, died during the 19th season of the world’s biggest StarCraft tournament.
That’s right – even though the game is over 27 years old, StarCraft is still played for large sums of money in front of international audiences. The highest level of competition is in South Korea, where the Afreeca Star League has been running semi-annually since 2016.
Last November, Zerg master Kim Min Chul, better known as Soulkey, scored an ASL three-peat, winning seasons 16, 17, and 18. This made him the first player to do so since the legendary Flash (Lee Young Ho).
This also connects him to Michael Jordan, who is famous for helping the Bulls complete two different three-peats in the 1990’s, securing streaks of three consecutive championships ending in 1993 and 1998.
