Reds Player / Coach Tommy Helms, Comrade of Pete Rose, Also Dies @ 83
News of Tommy’s death was first published on April 14th, which is the birthday of Pete Rose.
I mentioned Tommy Helms in this Blog post from October after Rose passed away. The two men were close associates, as they played together in the 60’s. Helms would also replace Rose as the Reds’ manager after the disgraced gambler was banished from baseball in 1989.
Tommy joined Pete on the field after he broke Ty Cobb’s all-time hits record in 1985:
