Opening Day – Yankees Beat Brewers, Vinny Capra Hits First HR
As a nearly-lifelong resident of the Milwaukee area, I was a bit distraught over the winter when legendary Brewers announcer Bob Uecker passed away at the age of 90.
The final game Uecker ever broadcast was Game 3 of the NL Wild Card Series between the Brewers and New York Mets. I actually made this post afterwards because it ended in rather dramatic fashion, with Brewers closer Devin Williams blowing the save in the 9th inning.
That post revolved around a riddle synced to Mario Mendoza, who is the namesake of baseball’s Mendoza Line, which is a .200 batting average. Three months after the game, Bob Uecker, who had a lifetime batting average of .200, passed away. See the video I made after that sad news:
So after Milwaukee lost to New York to end their 2024 season, they’ve traveled to New York to begin their 2025 season to play the Yankees. Over the offseason, the Yankees received Devin Williams in a trade, meaning the Brewers could be trying to hit off their former closer – and that’s exactly what happened in the 9th inning.
Just like Devin Williams melted down against the Mets in Game 3 of the Wild Card series, he appeared to begin melting down in the 9th inning against the Brewers yesterday. However, he managed to gather himself and pick up the save, giving up only one run in the process.
Naturally, this game featured a special tribute to Bob Uecker. In the top of the 3rd inning, Milwaukee newcomer Vinny Capra slapped a fastball over the left field fence for his first career home run. This prompted the Brewers’ radio crew to yell “Get up, get up, get outta here, GONE!” – which was Bob’s signature home run call:
