Texans Defeat Buccaneers 39-37 in NFL's "Game of the Year"

Last year, I made this post in November showing the numerical riddles of the NFL’s Game of the Year. Indeed, that Vikings-Bills matchup from Week 10 of 2022 did go on to win the “Game of the Year” award handed out by Fox Sports after the season was over.

Now, in Week 9 of this year’s NFL season, we already have our frontrunner for Game of the Year. With both teams entering at 3-5, a back-and-forth battle ended with the Texans prevailing 39-37 over the Buccaneers.

Last year’s Vikings-Bills tilt ended with a score of 33-30. This game was also 33-30 at one point – in fact, that’s when the game’s defining play occurred.

In the first half, Texans kicker Ka’imi Fairbairn suffered a quadriceps injury, forcing coach DeMeco Ryans to call upon his emergency kicker, running back Dare Ogunbowale. Ogunbowale, an undrafted journeyman out of Wisconsin, showed he was up to the task by drilling the second half kickoff through the end zone for a touchback.

However, Ryans did not have enough faith in him to try any field goals or extra points. That is, until halfway through the fourth quarter, when Dare was asked to kick a 29-yard field goal to take the lead in a tie game, and he delivered with authority.

The Buccaneers stormed back to take the lead, but quarterback C.J. Stroud led the Texans to an improbable touchdown drive in the last minute to win the game:
