The top story in many news outlets today is the indictment of former Cuban president Raul Castro for an incident all the way back in 1996, when an airplane carrying out a humanitarian mission was shot down near the Cuban coastline. Over a decade after the defiant act of aggression, a movie called Shoot Down was released, depicting the tragedy.

Raul Castro is of course the younger brother of the more famous (or infamous) Cuban leader Fidel Castro, who passed away in 2016.

While the headline states today’s date, May 20, 2026, this is only the date the indictment was announced. It was actually filed last month on April 23rd – a very significant date as well.
