Zhao Xintong Becomes First Asian to Win World Snooker Championship
For all the time I spent around pool tables in my 20’s, I’ve always been completely clueless about the game of snooker. The rules are actually simpler than I thought, but the level of skill required to play at the highest level is of course immense, and each year the players seem to be improving.
Enter controversial snooker professional Zhao Xintong, who became the first Asian man to capture the World Snooker Championship yesterday, May 5th. Zhao was temporarily banned for his knowledge of a match-fixing scandal, but reinstated in September last year. This forced him to battle through the entire field, becoming just the fourth qualifier in the tournament’s history to win the title:
This post will focus mostly on the semi-final match between Zhao Xintong and Ronnie O’Sullivan. It’s the year ’25.
