Late on a weekend during the Summer Olympics in Atlanta in 1996, crowds gathered at the Olympic village to celebrate the world of sport with live music and libations. The good vibes suddenly vanished just before 1:30 in the morning, however, after an explosion rocked the crowd, not far from the sound engineers’ tower.

Over 100 people had been hurt by a homemade bomb, with one woman dying from the injuries she sustained. The situation could have been a lot worse, however, had it not been for the quick-thinking actions of Richard Jewell. After the venue received a bomb threat, Jewell was the security guard who located the backpack with the explosive device and began ushering people away from the immediate area.

Richard soon become a household name – but not for his life-saving efforts. Instead, the media focused on him being a primary suspect in the attack. To this day, I was not able to remember the name of the man who was actually convicted with building and detonating the bomb. Although I knew it wasn’t Jewell, his was the only name I could associate with it.

In 2003, Eric Rudolph was arrested following a years-long manhunt and subsequently confessed. For a brief period, Rudolph spent time in the U.S. Army, much like Oklahoma City bomber Timothy McVeigh. Although the Alfred P. Murrah bombing had a much more catastrophic death toll, the one in Atlanta amidst a sea of sports fans doubtlessly spread similar fear through the public.
