GT3 Racing Driver Saves Competitor From Deadly Fire in Shanghai, China
You may see a lot of crazy things in motorsports throughout the course of a year…but you may not see anything like this ever again – as it shouldn’t have ever needed to happen in the first place.
During a GT3 race at China’s Shanghai International Circuit this weekend, a collision occurred between two cars dueling for position at Turn 14, the a hairpin at the end of a 1.2-kilometer straight. With approach speeds of about 200 mph, it’s by far the most dangerous corner on the track.
Upon impact, they barreled forward and destroyed the #91 car of Oliver Millroy, immediately causing a massive fireball to erupt. With no competent track marshals in sight, Dutchman Loek Hartog, who was driving behind the cars involved, immediately pulled over and jumped into action. After extinguishing a majority of the flames himself, he pulled an unconscious Millroy out of the vehicle, undoubtedly saving his life.
It was a remarkable moment of selfless bravery in the midst of a championship race, and Hartog is being widely and deservedly praised for his heroics. If I was the race director, I’m putting that man on top of the podium and letting everyone else fight for second. But unfortunately, it seems like China has no real race direction process.
Before I get into the numerology connecting these guys, I need to remind you that my most recent post was about the Formula One race held the following day, where Kimi Antonelli passed nearly the entire field to win his home race in Monza, Italy. Earlier this year, Antonelli got his maiden victory at Shanghai International Circuit.
