Mark McGwire’s 1998 Home Run Record
This post is to complete a decode I started 23 years ago.
In 1998, Mark McGwire broke a significant baseball record that had stood for nearly four decades by hitting his 62nd home run in a season. The previous mark was held by 3-time World Series champion Roger Maris.
The Yankee great’s full name was Roger Eugene Maris.
Maris would later die on December 14th, the date written 14/12:
At the start of the 1961 Major League Baseball season, the single-season home run record was 60 by Babe Ruth. That year, Roger Maris would go on to chase and break that mark.

The record remain untouched for over three decades until Mark McGwire hit his 61st home run of the season for the St. Louis Cardinals, the team that Maris finished his career with, on the same date his father John was celebrating his 61st birthday:

Maris hit his 61 home runs in 161 games. Intriguingly, Mark McGwire‘s full name has gematria of 161, matching Ninety-eight, the year he first hit 61. This connects to Maris’s birthplace of Hibbing, Minnesota.

Mark McGwire‘s full name sums to 100 and 80, similar to Cardinals, the team he broke the record with.
